3D Design Project

I have just finished a week of studying 3DD, and for our project we had to come up with a crisis and design a 3D model than can solve the crisis.

I started by researching 3D responses to crisis’ and then annotated my research. This gave me a few ideas, so I then made a mind map in my sketchbook of different crisis’. One of my crisis’ was feet hurting wearing heels on a night out. To solve this problem I came up with a 3D design where a high heel shoe can transform into a flat shoe with a push of a button. This would be a very useful shoe for a night out on the town of your feet were really hurting, or if you where to go out wearing heels and the weather changed dramatically (e.g. snow).

After a few sketches of my design I started to make my model. I used rubber from a wellington boot as the sole as it was flexible so it could bend easily, and I glued cardboard onto the heel and the front to give a bit more support. I then started making the heel by cutting out strips of card and using masking tape to fix each strip into different size cylinders. I made the size difference between the cylinders very small so that they could fit inside one another and also slide out to make a big heel and stay like that. I then cut up an old bag and used that material to make two thin straps to go across the front of the shoe. I painted the shoe black to finish it off.

Moving Image Project – Time Well Spent

This week we studied moving image and photography and for our project we had to make a short animation clip, working in a team of five.

First we brainstormed our ideas for themes in our sketchbook and eventually came to the idea of twitter. We then came up with a storyboard which is also in our sketchbooks. We cut out clouds, birds and letters from card and printed out tweets we found interesting and cut them out to use in our project. We then used lighting and filming equipment to capture our animation. We made the lights as bright as possible and made our animation by taking lots of pictures and putting them together so the birds and the tweets look like they’re moving. Taking all these pictures actually did not take as long as I thought it would; the editing took almost as long as the software was quite complicated to use, especially since none of us had ever used it before.

The narrative of our animation is about social media and how online arguments get out of control. We used a variety of shots such as zooming 300m in and out depending on how much the shot relates to the issue. We also made some shots blurry for effect.

Our animation is below:

Fashion

For our fashion project we had to come up with a disaster and make a piece of clothing to protect you from that disaster. My disaster was that the rain had turned poisonous so I wanted to make a coat with a hood to defect the poison, but it ended up being a dress with a hood.

After doing some research on what materials to use and making three mood boards, I drew out some sketches of design ideas. I decided to use a bin bag to make the dress as it’s waterproof and seemed suitable for my project. I first cut arm and head holes in the bin bag then used another bin bag to cut two strips for the sleeves. I then did some research to see how I could attach plastic together and got the idea of fusing the bin bags together. I used an iron to attach the sleeves and melt the plastic together.

I then made the hood by sewing two pieces of fabric together and I used a glue gun to stick on the plastic bill on the hood, which is meant to stop the rain getting in the face. I wanted the bill to be see through plastic so it was easy to see. I cut two holes in the hood and stuck white straws through them, then glued a small plastic bag inside the hood. This was supposed to act as a filter for the rain so that the rain in the plastic bag is clean and no longer poisonous. This meant that the filtered rain is drinkable to keep the person hydrated since all the rivers will be contaminated with poisonous rain.

After stapling the hood to the dress, I then decided to make a belt for the dress so that it wasn’t too baggy so that rain would drip inside it. I made it with some wire material and attached it to the dress using a long strip of black material to add a futuristic effect.

Overall this week studying fashion has definitely been my favorite week as it is my passion and is the type of career I want to go down. I enjoyed experimenting with new techniques and materials and the final outcome was better than I expected.

Fine Art – Traces

Image

For our fine art project we had to think of traces that can be left behind. My idea was the traces left on the art tables, for example paint marks. I thought these traces were interesting as it shows all the different colours and tones people have been using on their work and how the layers of paint have built up on the tables people have worked on.

I took many photo’s of traces on tables, then I re-created my photo’s with acrylic paint in my sketchbook. I then thought it might be interesting to try painting on different materials such as plastic and wood. I then decided I wanted to attach all my favorite studies together in an interesting way, so I drilled holes through the plastic and wood so that I could attach them together with screws.

I like how abstract it looks, with all the different shapes, colours and materials.

Visual-Communication (Bookmaking)

I experimented with cut outs from a magazine making collages. I found a bright, funky pattern to use in the background and experimented with ripping some edges whilst cutting others. I also cut a figure out of a page and stuck the background and figure in different places. I used lots of layering.

I also experimented with handwritten text and how it can be interpreted differently. For example I used red writing to show death. I also experimented with making key words stand out by making them bigger, bolder and underlining it. All this text is from an article I studied which was about a shooting in Kilburn.

We had to find ten images that linked to our article, then we made a collage type piece using our images by cutting and sticking them in, drawing them or painting over them. A lot of my images represented death, for example the flowers, skull and the gun. I used a lot of red to represent blood.

We then used all the work we had already done with the text and the collage to make a book. We practiced making different types of books first and I decided that the Concertina book was my favourite so I used that one. I stuck bits of my text onto my collage then cut my collage up into A6 pieces to stick into my book. I edited my book by making collage writing from magazines whilst keeping to my colour theme of black, white and red. I then splattered ink on a few pages to decorate it and give effect.

M/M (Paris) was a big influence of mine as their work had meaning to it when you look carefully at the text and images, and they use a lot of black and white which was in my colour theme for my own project. I found their work really interesting as it was original and they used a lot of negative space where needed.
